Description
A simple, kid-friendly slow cooker applesauce made with just a few ingredients. This recipe requires no added sugar, allows for texture customization, and is perfect for involving children in the kitchen.
Ingredients
Scale
- 6 large apples (approx. 2.5 kg), peeled, cored, and chopped into 1-inch chunks (mix of Granny Smith and Fuji/Gala recommended)
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1/4 cup water
- 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (optional)
Instructions
- Wash, peel, and chop the apples into roughly 1-inch chunks. Remove cores.
- Place the chopped apples into a 4-quart slow cooker.
- Sprinkle the ground cinnamon and lemon juice over the apples.
- Pour in the water and stir gently to distribute ingredients and ensure apples are somewhat submerged.
- Cover and cook on Low for 6-8 hours, until apples are very soft and easily pierced with a fork.
- Turn off the slow cooker and let the mixture cool for 10 minutes.
- Stir in vanilla extract if using.
- Mash with a potato masher for chunky texture or blend with an immersion blender for smooth texture.
- Cool completely to room temperature before storing in airtight containers.
Notes
This recipe is forgiving; texture can be adjusted from chunky to smooth. It freezes well for up to 3 months. For a sweeter taste, use more Fuji/Gala apples or add honey/maple syrup after cooking. Ensure apples are stirred occasionally during the first hour to prevent sticking.
