Easy Classic Yellow Cake with Chocolate Frosting

  • Author: Isabel
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 9 servings 1x

Description

A moist, simple, and delicious yellow cake made with a box mix but elevated with butter and milk, topped with a rich, creamy chocolate frosting. Ready in under 45 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (15.25 oz) Yellow Cake Mix
  • 1 cup Whole Milk
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter, Melted
  • 3 Large Eggs
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 1 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter
  • 2 cups Powdered Sugar, Sifted
  • 23 tbsp Heavy Cream or Milk
  • 1/4 tsp Salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan with butter or non-stick spray, optionally lining the bottom with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, melted butter, milk, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes (or whisk by hand for 3-4 minutes) until smooth. Do not overmix.
  3. Pour batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  5. While the cake cools, melt the chocolate chips and 1/2 cup butter together in a small saucepan over low heat or in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth. Let cool slightly.
  6. Stir the powdered sugar and salt into the chocolate mixture. Add heavy cream one tablespoon at a time until a spreadable consistency is reached.
  7. Once the cake is completely cool, spread the frosting evenly over the top. Slice and serve.

Notes

For best results, use whole milk and room temperature eggs. Ensure the cake is completely cool before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting. If the frosting is too thick, add more cream; if too thin, add more powdered sugar. Can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
